: Strategic developments in Black Sea
Russian "shadow fleet" tankers are falsifying coordinates in the Black Sea to avoid Ukrainian attacks, according to FT. Sanctioned Russian tankers in the Black Sea are transmitting false coordinates, concealing their real routes. Presumably, this is how the vessels are trying to avoid strikes by Ukrainian drones, writes the Financial Times. 🔹 According to "shadow fleet" tracking specialist Ola Ballinger from University College London, at least 12 sanctioned tankers have used the same devices for transmitting false coordinates. Six vessels simultaneously broadcast two different positions through the Automatic Identification System (AIS). 🔹 A particularly unusual tactic was recorded during passage through the Bosphorus: tankers transmitted the true coordinates necessary for passing through the strait, but simultaneously showed another position hundreds of kilometers away from their actual location. 🔹 According to analysts' estimates, Russia is adapting methods of concealing routes that it previously used to circumvent Western sanctions to protect oil sea transportation from Ukrainian attacks. Most of the 12 tankers have switched to the Russian flag over the past year. 🔹 According to the analytical company Windward, over the summer, more than 80 vessels switched to the Russian flag. In total, the company counts 1229 "shadow fleet" tankers with a deadweight of over 20,000 tons, more than three-quarters of which are under US, UK, or EU sanctions. ✅ Subscribe to Spravdi on Telegram
