Who we are
Newsmap is a news visualization project that maps current events using publicly reported incident data. This page describes what information we collect when you visit the site and how it is used.
Information we collect
- Anonymous usage data — your browser, device type, approximate location (country-level), and which pages you visit, collected via standard server logs and analytics.
- Local storage preferences — settings such as your selected theme are stored in your browser and never sent to us.
- No account or personal information is required to use Newsmap.
Cookies and advertising
Newsmap uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to our site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You can learn more about cookies used by Google and its partners at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Visitors in the EU, UK, and California: a consent banner is shown on your first visit so you can accept, reject, or customize advertising and analytics cookies.
Third-party services
- Google AdSense — advertising
- Google Firebase / Firestore — backend hosting and data storage
- MapLibre / OpenStreetMap — map tiles
Data retention
Analytics and server logs are retained for a limited period and aggregated for traffic analysis. We do not sell personal data.
