Japan: Battles in Japan

Japanese and American large-scale joint military exercise exacerbates regional tensions Tokyo, October 19 (Xinhua) -- Japan and the United States are holding a large-scale joint military exercise codenamed "Sword 27" in multiple locations in Japan starting from the 19th. The "Type 25 anti-ship missile" will participate in this exercise, which is also the first time this missile will participate in a large-scale military exercise since its official deployment in March this year. Analysts point out that this exercise will exacerbate regional tensions and undermine peace and stability in Asia. The "Sword 27" exercise will continue until the 29th, and its scope covers multiple fields including land, sea, air, space, electromagnetic, and cyber, including air defense, anti-ship operations, paratrooping, amphibious operations, and electromagnetic warfare. The exercise areas cover Okinawa, Kyushu, Hokkaido, and other regions. The "Type 25 anti-ship missile" is considered one of Japan's first missiles with "enemy base attack capability", with a range of about 1,000 kilometers, far exceeding Japan's territory. Kotsuyuki Atsushi, honorary professor at Yamaguchi University, said that the participation of this missile in the Japan-US joint military exercise, as well as the first deployment of two US military weapons to Yonaguni Island, will exacerbate regional tensions and is extremely regrettable. The Japanese government repeatedly claims that "the security environment in East Asia is becoming increasingly severe", but what is truly causing this tension is precisely Japan and the United States. Fujita Takakage, chairman of the Japan "Inheritance and Development of the Murayama Statement" Association, said regarding this military exercise that it is an extremely dangerous exercise and such military exercises that undermine peace and stability in Asia should be stopped. According to a previous report by Kyodo News Agency, the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the US military will deploy approximately 45,000 and 12,000 personnel respectively; the "Type 25 anti-ship missile" will be transferred from its base in Kumamoto Prefecture to the Ohara Maneuver Area spanning Nagasaki and Saga Prefectures, and will participate in anti-ship combat training, but will not conduct actual launches; in addition, advanced US military equipment "Navy/Marine Expeditionary Ship Intercept System" and "Sea-based Air Defense Integrated System" will be deployed to Yonaguni Island, the westernmost island of Okinawa Prefecture, for the first time. The Japan-US "Sword" live-fire exercise is generally held every two years.
