Israel: Explosions/remote violence in Jerusalem

Israeli prison guards are firing rubber bullets at close range into cells, yards, and even lawyer waiting rooms, severely injuring Palestinian prisoners, Haaretz reports. In one case at Ktziot prison, a prisoner's testicle was "completely mutilated" and surgically removed, after he said guards kicked him in the testicles during a search and a rubber bullet fired through his cell door later hit the same testicle. "I looked like a butchered animal," he said. Another prisoner needed surgery for a fractured tibia. Physicians for Human Rights and the Public Committee Against Torture documented 21 cases and warn of an "unprecedented escalation," with shooting becoming "another routine way to apply violence in prisons." The Israel Prison Service dismissed the findings as "a worldwide smear campaign."
