Russia: Natural event in Siberia

State Duma Deputy proposed installing bear-proof trash containers in Siberia. For now, regions pay for shooting bears. Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Tourism Timur Kanokov proposed obliging regions to install bear-proof containers with lockable lids at all tourist sites and public recreation areas where bears live. He told RIA Novosti about this in an interview. Kanokov also proposed timely removal of garbage from sites and creating a unified federal set of rules for tourists: not to leave food in tents and at campsites, not to approach bears, and not to feed them for photos. Since the beginning of the year in Russia, according to official data, more than two thousand bears have been killed. In Transbaikalia and Buryatia, hunters are paid 15 thousand rubles for each killed animal, in the Irkutsk region, 12-15 bears are killed per day. Zoologists interviewed by the publication "Kedr" believe that shooting deals with the consequence, not the cause, and call the main preventive measure precisely limiting bears' access to food near housing: processing food waste, eliminating landfills, and bear-resistant containers. 📸 Send photos/videos/information: @helloastrabot 💫 Subscribe to ASTRA on Instagram, Facebook, X in Russian, X in English, WhatsApp and DeltaChat, TikTok
