Thailand: Event in Bangkok
Civil society groups urge World Bank to cooperate with groups not under military control. Irrawaddy, October 19, 2026 Myanmar civil society organizations have issued a statement demanding that the World Bank cooperate only with democratic and ethnic administrative bodies in Myanmar that are not under military control and are building a federal democratic system on the ground and providing public services. This demand was made when World Bank officials met with representatives of Myanmar civil society groups during the 2026 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) held in Bangkok, Thailand on October 12, according to a statement released today by the Progressive Voice group. At the Civil Society Forum, Daw Khin UMM, founder of Progressive Voice, directly questioned World Bank President Ajay Banga about the lack of engagement with democratic administrative bodies in Myanmar and also demanded a response to previous letters sent. It is also known that they demanded that local administrative bodies and civil society organizations be allowed to participate in the World Bank's humanitarian and reconstruction programs, that aid not be channeled through military-controlled systems, and that aid be monitored by independent organizations. The organizations have pointed out that the World Bank can only deliver aid effectively to those in need if it cooperates with local organizations. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar #RejectMilitaryCoup
