India: Event in New Delhi

Gener Z-led protests against India's voter registration end with arrests. A demonstrator wears a mask with the face of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during a protest in New Delhi, India, on October 3, 2026. The Indian police detained several people on Saturday (3), according to a police source, during the second day of protests in New Delhi against changes to the country's voter registration list. The demonstrations are supported by the Cockroach Janta Party, a political group linked to the Z generation, and by other opposition organizations. Participants claim the changes favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party and demand the resignation of the head of India's Election Commission, Gyanesh Kumar. The protests are the most recent of a series of youth-led protests that emerged this year and have increased pressure on Modi, who has been in power for 12 years. About 100 demonstrators removed security barriers on Saturday and shouted slogans such as 'voting thief, resign' and 'Gyanesh Kumar, resign.' Police forcibly detained part of the group. Independent parliamentarian Kapil Sibal, All India Students' Association president Neha Bora, and political activists Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav were among the demonstrators, according to a Reuters witness. Police did not report how many people were detained nor their identities. First, they removed people from the voter list and now they are not allowing us to protest against this. That is unacceptable', Bora said to Reuters. Kumar did not comment on the protests or requests for him to resign. On Friday (2), police prevented another group of demonstrators from gathering and put several of them on buses. Nearby metro stations remained closed due to the strong security scheme. Although many people detained on Friday were released, several were accused of allegedly disobeying orders that ban large gatherings in New Delhi, according to a police source. The protests are related to a national voter registration verification process started last year. Critics say the measure led to the removal of millions of voters who would have the right to vote. The Election Commission, an institution that for a long time has been among the most reliable in India, says the revision aims to remove duplicates, deceased people, and people who do not meet the requirements to vote from the list. On Friday, the agency determined that new voters who gained the right to vote be registered and people who were left out of voter lists be re-included.
