Austria: Strategic developments in Vienna
Former UN official: Global Development Initiative injects momentum into international development cooperation Xinhua, Vienna, October 2nd (Reporter Liu Haiyan) This year marks the 5th anniversary of the proposal of the Global Development Initiative. Chang Qide, CEO of the Vienna-based Tianlin Think Tank, headquartered in Austria's capital, Vienna, recently stated that the Global Development Initiative directly addresses the global development deficit, injects crucial momentum into the revitalization of international development cooperation, and provides a strong handle for advancing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Chang Qide previously served as the UN Development System Resident Coordinator in China and Resident Coordinator in Kenya. In an interview with Xinhua reporter in Vienna, he said that the Global Development Initiative directly addresses the issues of the times, placing development back at the core of international cooperation. He has witnessed this concept taking root and growing, both in African villages and in China's policy practices. Chang Qide stated that he had worked in Kenya for a long time and personally witnessed the changes brought to the lives of local people by clean drinking water, grassroots clinics, and the successful export of harvested crops. In Ethiopia, the China-Africa (Ethiopia)-UN (UNIDO) Cooperation Demonstration Center carries out industrial skills training to help local employment. He said that many development plans have fallen through, not due to a lack of vision, but due to a lack of funding and technology, and even more so, a lack of partners willing to persevere long-term. The Global Development Initiative is highly aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on realistic needs such as poverty reduction, food security, green development, and connectivity, providing feasible paths to solve development challenges. In Chang Qide's view, outstanding Global Development Initiative cooperation projects share commonalities, namely respecting the autonomous needs of recipient countries, emphasizing capacity building rather than simple hardware delivery, and collaborating based on existing multilateral systems rather than starting anew. "Measuring the Global Development Initiative not only by how much resources are raised, but more importantly, by how many ordinary people's lives are changed," Chang Qide said. Five years of practice have proven that the value of the Global Development Initiative lies not only in the various projects it supports, but also in demonstrating that in the field of development, international cooperation is both feasible and indispensable.
