Tajikistan: Violence against civilians in Dushanbe

Five students were expelled from teaching at the State Pedagogical University for not participating in a march dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan's independence, which the authorities call a "politically significant event". This is despite representatives of several universities and the Ministry of Education previously stating that participation in such ceremonies is voluntary, not mandatory. The order of the administration of the Tajik State Pedagogical University on the expulsion of at least five students was issued in August. Radio Ozodi obtained a copy of it on October 19 through its sources. The order officially named "non-participation in a political event" as the reason for the students' expulsion.
