Portugal: Protests in Lisboa

Housing crisis provokes confrontations between protesters and security forces in Portugal. Portuguese riot police removed dozens of tents set up by protesters protesting the housing crisis in the country. There were confrontations, use of batons and 13 arrests in Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon, dozens of police officers, some accompanied by dogs, dismantled a camp in Rossio Square. In Porto, the operation took place in Dom João Primeiro Square. Actions began around 4:30 a.m. As police advanced, protesters screamed: 'This smells like dictatorship' and 'We are peaceful.' According to police, six people were arrested in Lisbon and seven in Porto for not obeying orders to leave the locations. Police claim protesters threw bottles, paint and pyrotechnics at agents. Thirteen police officers were injured and eight had to be taken to the hospital. Three plainclothes police officers were also allegedly assaulted in Porto. Protesters claim the number of injured is higher. The Lisboa Camp group says more than 30 people were injured, 10 needing hospital care. Camps were set up after peaceful protests against housing price increases. The movement criticizes the center-right government, which aims to facilitate evictions and end limits on new rental contract values. Protesters fear changes will increase housing costs and leave tenants more vulnerable.
