The SR-71 Blackbird’s Ancestor Was Redrawn in 1961 to Carry 4 Nuclear Bombs at Mach 3.2 and 90,000 Feet, Then the Air Force Chose the 6-Engine XB-70 Valkyrie Gen. Curtis LeMay and SAC commander Gen. Thomas Power both took interest in the RB-12 in 1961, but the XB-70's backers inside the Air Force would not consider another aircraft for the mission, and the shift toward ballistic missiles finished it. The technology survived as the SR-71 Blackbird.
