Iran: Protests in Tehran
Poem: The Sheikh and the Rope By Mohammad Mahdavifar (Written in 1392/2013) Listen to a sheikh who is accepted by God, Unmindful of the world and preoccupied with God. His love is service to the needy creatures, He would not harm a moth with his foot. Good years came as a good omen for the sheikh, For a moment, his fortune was lost. In an accident, his ear was injured, He became deaf forever. As he was so beloved by God, His character was praiseworthy and desirable. His Creator compensated him in return, And opened a spring of knowledge to him. So he slept one night until dawn broke, He heard the objects speaking. He saw all the objects glorifying God, There is no power but from Him. I will move past the description of the sheikh and the beyond, To get to the heart of the matter. One day the sheikh came with his wife's order, To a market full of noise and clamor. To buy a clip, nail, and rope, Raisins, matches, grapes, and rosewater. He found a shop full of ropes, And there the gentleman stopped. He suddenly saw every speechless rope, Speaking to the shopkeeper. A calamity is coming to your door, Send him away, for your mother's sake. Do not give any of us to him, So that he returns from wherever he came. For years he has wronged us, This unfaithful one has tarnished our name. We used to have dignity, Because we did not refrain from service. Wherever there was someone fallen in a well, Or a broken-down car on the road, We made the hands of the suffering happy, And prayers were made for us and for the ropes. He raised his head from us so much, That he took away our pride. With hatred, he brought down thousands of us, like cypress trees. He instilled fear in hearts with us, As heads were hung with us in every square. The city became depressed under our feet, As many throats were squeezed by our hands. He withered the unbloomed bud, He consumed shame, modesty, and chastity. O Lord of the ropes, who is this sheikh? Is it not a creation like you, alas?! The sheikh said, "Calm down a bit, O rope, Come out of unfounded assumptions." Because not every yellow is turmeric, Nor did every round thing become a walnut. Remember, on a night of insecurity, An evil one stole a garment from us. He put on our garment himself, And diminished our value in your eyes. Our reward from you was unpaid, Whatever it was, it was from the garment and the thief. Sorrow filled the thunderous resonance of the sheikh, But no rain came after the sheikh. Either our sheikh's reasoning was not comprehensive, Or the rope was not satisfied with all this. He said, "Where is a virtuous and trustworthy sheikh? On which sheikh can I rely from now on?" How do I know you are my sheikh? Or that you are that demon, beast, and evil one? Therefore, the rope's intellect says this: Avoid every sheikh everywhere. Make yourself comfortable, the conclusion is, Put on the clothes of the people, and that's all. @mahdavifar2021
