Iraq: Event in Najaf
Statement ••••• In the framework of government efforts aimed at facilitating the movement of travelers and visitors coming to or leaving Iraq, and supporting the humanitarian, medical, tourism, and educational aspects, and with close follow-up by the Prime Minister, Mr. Ali Falih Al-Zaydi, regarding the resumption of flights for Iranian airlines to and from Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf International Airport, through a series of communications and follow-ups with the concerned parties. These efforts resulted in reaching an agreement that allows for the operation of 40 daily flights to and from Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf International Airport for Iranian airlines, with the exception of Mahan Air. In this context, the Prime Minister values the positive response shown by the American government to the Iraqi endeavors, and its cooperation in granting the required exception, which contributes to resolving this issue and facilitating the movement of visitors and travelers, especially cases related to medical treatment, religious visits, and tourism. This cooperation reflects the importance of dialogue and understanding in resolving issues with a humanitarian dimension, and confirms that diplomatic channels and responsible communication are capable of finding practical solutions that take into account the interests and needs of the people. The Prime Minister affirmed that air traffic represents more than just movement between two airports; it is a bridge for communication between peoples. Among the travelers are patients waiting to reach their place of treatment, or visitors to the holy shrines, or families waiting to be reunited with ease and simplicity, in addition to the importance of this movement for tourism, economy, and social communication. His Excellency also stressed that Iraq bases its external relations and communications on the interests of its people, and on its keenness to build balanced and positive relations with various countries, and to harness these relations to facilitate people's lives and maintain communication between peoples. The Prime Minister will continue to follow up on files that directly affect the lives of citizens and visitors, and to work with all concerned parties to remove obstacles to transportation and air traffic, in a way that serves Iraq, preserves the interests of travelers, and enhances human cooperation and communication between peoples. ••••• Office of the Prime Minister's Media Affairs October 2, 2026
