Brazil: Strategic developments in Rio de Janeiro

President Ana Tereza Basilio of the OAB-RJ section defended on Tuesday (6th) that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decide as soon as possible about the election for the State Governor of Rio de Janeiro, since the Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) had already made its statement. Depending on the collegiate decision of the TSE, Rio de Janeiro could have a second round for governor or have an elected candidate in the first round. Ana Tereza said that the vote in the state needs legal security. 'TThis decision must occur before the second round deadline to provide legal security to our battered State of Rio de Janeiro, which is always suffering from legal insecurity. What society expects is that it happens immediately, given that there was today the statement of the Electoral Public Ministry,' said Ana Basilio. The Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) sent on this Tuesday (6th) to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) an opinion favorable to the request of the Rio de Janeiro government candidate Anthony Garotinho (Republicanos) to give up the appeal against the decision that barred his candidacy. If the abandonment is homologated, the votes received by Garotinho will be definitively annulled, which could lead to the election of Douglas Ruas (PL) for the state government in the first round. Election With the new count, Ruas will obtain more than 50% of valid votes, excluding blank and null ones, main rule for a candidate to be declared victor. Ruas obtained 4,271,199 votes, equivalent to 49.27% of valid votes, and Eduardo Paes (PSD) managed 3,706,984 valid votes (42.76%). Garotinho received 274,411 votes (3.17%). His name remained on the ballot because the decision of the TRE-RJ that barred the candidate was taken after the closure of the electronic ballot box system.
