United States: Strategic developments in Washington D.C.
$4,000,000 to Flush a Toilet on USS Gerald R. Ford? The Answer Is Yes for this Nuclear Aircraft Carrier The VCHT replaced gravity plumbing the Navy had used since the age of sail — narrower pipes, less fresh water, bends where straight drops used to be required, and multiple decks sharing one pressurized line. That last part is the problem. On a gravity system a blockage kills one or two heads. On a linked vacuum system it kills a quarter of the ship's. And low water use lets calcium build up inside the pipes, which has to be dissolved with acid, in port, at around $400,000 a time.
